I have never kept Dusky Lories, but have always admired their beauty and boisterous nature. 10-15 years ago I saw them regularly in Australian lory collections and they were quite readily available on the market here. This seems to have noticeably changed in recent years, with Duskies having become far less prevalent, or at least it certainly appears this way. I will add that back when I used to see them regularly, the red phase was very noticeably more common than the yellow phase, and most yellow phase birds that I saw were not of great quality.
Do you feel that this a true reflection of the current status of Dusky Lories in Australian Aviculture? How many breeders are still working with this beautiful species? And do we still have both red and yellow phase birds?
I snapped this photo of this stunning specimen during a visit to the beautiful facility and collection of my dear friend, Anil Garg in India.
