The Red-bellied Macaw Orthopsittaca manilata has never been common in captivity. It has generally been regarded as a difficult species to acclimate, and successes have been few and far between. They are a beautiful species of small macaw and we can only hope that the breeders who do currently have them experience improved success into the future. I photographed this beautiful specimen in the collection of Jaco Lacs of Panama.

This species was exported in large numbers but proved to be the most difficult macaw to acclimate. It is now teetering on disappearing from aviculture in many countries, Clearly diet was a key factor contributing to failure.
It is the same story everywhere we travel, hey brother.
And they are breeding better with more pairs in the Same collection
When they where imported i, saw there where a lott in a bird market in Holland. Butt nobody had intressed in them.
That’s a great shame.
Yes the bird look in bad shape. And there was not a lott off info over them.
Around 15 years ago I Bought 3 S/S Adults for £27 for all 3 at a small village bird sale in North East England. I kept them for a good while and found that a fresh food diet with minimal seed ect that I fed my Eclectus very successfully with.
