During early March 2015 I was fortunate enough to spend a magical 22 hours in the Brazilian Pantanal; although not a long time, it was undoubtedly incredible! I will never forget my first sighting of the Big Blue Budgies of the Pantanal aka Hyacinth Macaws, it was a long held dream come true.
As soon as the engine of the small 4 seater Cessna was cut, I immediately heard their distinctive call. I ran toward the sound and was rewarded with the breathtaking sight of the first wild Hyacinth Macaws I had ever laid eyes on. I'd be lying if I said that I was calm and collected at this point, my senses were alive with excitement, it was certainly an unforgettable moment in my life.
Hyacinths are such stunning birds, and don't get me wrong, they are no less stunning in an aviary, but seeing them flying across the fields and feeding on palm nuts in the surrounds of the lodge that we stayed at was just another level altogether; it certainly gave me a full appreciation for the true beauty of these amazing birds.
I snapped the accompanying series of images later that day, I hope that you enjoy them as much a I do.
Amazing photos!! I saw some of these guys in Singapore and i love them. But dont think i could ever own one..
